Sounds of the Surveilled

Punitive governance envelops a community in a carceral atmosphere. We hear this atmosphere in carceral soundscapes.

In this section we investigate two carceral soundscapes in Richmond, Virginia: police surveillance of BLM protests in the summer of 2020, and the sounds of a music recording program in the Richmond jail.
